Choosing a Children’s Bible
When it comes to choosing a bible, I’m pretty picky. I want my bible to be easy to read and understand, but I don’t want to lose the power and impact of the original phrasing. I want guided readings with helpful insights. Most of all, I want my bible to be beautiful.
My guidelines for a children’s bible are largely the same, save for one additional condition: abridged bibles must uphold the spirit of the text, not just the entertainment. For me, The Beginner’s Bible checks all of the boxes.
There is no question that The Beginner’s Bible is beautiful. The colors are bright and whimsical, sure to catch a child’s eye, but the images are thoughtful as well. They capture the heart of the text and make it easy for children to relate to the stories.
I immediately flipped to the Christmas story when my copy arrived and fell in love with Denis Alonso’s illustrations. He beautifully captures the Mary’s uncertainty when Gabriel appears, the wonder of the shepherds as they take in a chorus of angels, and even the worry on Joseph’s face when he realizes his wife will give birth in a barn.
As for the text, The Beginner’s Bible doesn’t shy away. It starts with creation and works straight through to Revelations. Any children’s bible that can make Revelations not only understandable, but relatable is a major contender in my book.
The stories are short and simple without losing the meaning of the text, and each story is the perfect length for a bedtime or after-church reading.
